Built for safety, local firefighters celebrate the arrival of new fire engines

On this #FirefighterFriday, the Winter Haven Fire Department stopped by the LEGOLAND Hotel to capture a colorful photo of its brand new, custom designed pumper.  The firefighters were all smiles as they posed in front of the new truck which they say is sure to improve service and increase safety for the firefighters.

Chris Humphrey, Assistant Fire Chief of Winter Haven Fire Department tells us the hotel was the perfect backdrop as they prepare to share this great news with the local community. “When you ask firefighters which toys were their favorite as a kid, most will pick firetrucks and LEGO.  How fortunate we are to have both of our favorites in our backyard.  We are very excited to present our new apparatus at LEGOLAND Florida Resort.”

The new truck will replace two pumpers that have been in service for 18 years.  They can pump 1,250 gallons per minute and carry 500 gallons of water!  Firefighters tell us they are most excited about the new look and spacious feel of the new engines.

Taste the possibilities at Firehouse Ice Cream

Since signed into law by presidential proclamation in 1984, Americans have celebrated National Ice Cream Month every July and National Ice Cream Day on the third Sunday in July. (That’s July 17 this year.)

This year, why not celebrate with a scoop, cup, cone or sundae at one of the many locations serving ice cream at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort?

The awesome new Firehouse Ice Cream in LEGO City has a terrific menu of delicious choices, including eight flavors of Breyers ice cream, 15 different toppings and four sauces, plus two signature sundaes. Yum!

2015.06.26_LEGOLANDFLORIDA_HEATLAKE_0152The ultimate indulgence, the Rescue Squad Sundae, is made with a choice of a chocolate chip cookie or brownie, four scoops of ice cream, two sauces, two toppings, whipped cream and served in a souvenir bowl.

That got us thinking — how many different ways are there to create that sundae? To figure out the total number of possibilities, we turned to our resident math whiz and number cruncher, Ken. Here’s the answer:RescueSquadSundaeInfographicB

Pokémon spotted at LEGOLAND Florida Resort

The tremendously popular new app Pokémon GO has kids seeking to “catch ‘em all” all across our resort!  Guests are welcome to play during their visit, but we’ve issued a few ground rules to ensure a safe search.

IMG_1247

Pokémon caught posing with Emmet and Wyldstyle.

Rules for a safe Pokémon GO quest at LEGOLAND Florida Resort:

  • Even a Pokémon Master must stay within guest areas. Please don’t climb any fences or follow any Pokémon into employee-only areas.
  • No catch is worth sacrificing your safety. All play must pause throughout the duration of your ride until you exit the ride.
  • Be sure not to bump into one of our more than 28,000 LEGO® models – that could hurt!
  • With more than 100 Pokémon to catch, be sure to stay hydrated.
  • If you find a Pokémon at the Fun Town Pizza Pasta Buffet, let the nearest Model Citizen know, we prefer pepperoni over Poké Balls.
  • If hours of play have unleashed the power of your phone, recharge in the Imagination Zone.
  • If your wild encounter leads you to Wyldstyle, keep in mind she may need to stop for a selfie with another guest before you can make your catch.

Merlin’s Magic Wand unveils latest ‘Magic Spaces’ project at Orlando facility for kids and families

Merlin's Magic WandMerlin’s Magic Wand, the global charity run by the parent company of LEGOLAND® Florida Resort, recently helped put some magic into the lives of kids who need it most.

Three therapy rooms at The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families near downtown Orlando, Fla., were given magical makeovers as part of the Merlin’s Magic Spaces initiative, turning the formerly ordinary spaces into extraordinary examples of Merlin Entertainments’ creativity and compassion.

LEGOLAND1The whimsical new décor was inspired by Merlin’s Central Florida attractions — LEGOLAND® Florida Resort, The Orlando Eye, Madame Tussauds and SEA LIFE Aquarium — and created in collaboration with Merlin Magic Making, Edd Musgrove Creative and Attraction & Entertainment Solutions.

The rooms are used for therapy and other services offered at the center, which helps kids and families who face overwhelming challenges like child abuse, developmental disabilities and lack of access to medical care.

Merlin's Magic Spaces“These rooms have been dramatically transformed into magical, inviting spaces to the delight of the children and families we serve,” said Marie Martinez, operations manager at The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families. “Our therapists have been using these rooms for about three weeks now and everyone just loves them.”

COMING THIS FALL: An American classic born in 1964 will be reborn in bricks at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort

This fall, kids can discover the car that re-defined cool when we unveil the next giant LEGO® model here at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort.

In the spring of 1964, the Ford Mustang’s long hood and short rear deck made it an instant sensation when it was introduced to an eager public. More than a half-century later, we’re introducing that American classic to a whole new generation in an awesome way.  In association with Southern Ford Dealers, one of our longtime sponsors, we’re creating a life-sized version of the original Mustang out of thousands of LEGO bricks.

Mustang-CLIP-Working-PD-WhiteThe giant Mustang model will be built at the U.S. headquarters of The LEGO Group in Enfield, Conn., and then will make several appearances around the country before arriving at the theme park this fall. It’s a 1:1 replica of the so-called “1964½” V8 coupe, the very first model that delighted American car buyers after debuting at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964.

Southern Ford Dealers

The life-size “1964½” Ford Mustang model will go on display outside the theme park’s popular Ford Driving School attraction, courtesy of longtime sponsor Southern Ford Dealers. Visiting the park recently were, left to right, Joe Cohen, Global Team Blue; Jim Scott, Jarrett-Scott Ford; Blakeley Vinicky, Global Team Blue; Philip Weikert, Weikert Ford; and Brian Jarrett, Jarrett Automotive Group. Blakeley is holding a LEGO® Ford Mustang GT, from Speed Champions set No. 75871, released in 2016.

Ford Driving School is where this timeless beauty will call home, replacing the LEGO version of the Ford Explorer that has appeared in thousands of guests’ photos since the theme park opened in 2011. Don’t worry — we’ve got plans for the Explorer. After a bit of TLC, it’s going on permanent display at an exclusive location we’ll announce at a later date.

Detroit produced 92,705 versions of the 1964½ Mustang, but only LEGOLAND Florida Resort guests will be able to beam at this original. Don’t be surprised if this pony has a few secrets under its hood!

The LEGO Master Model Builders in Connecticut know approximately how many bricks it will take to re-create the first Ford Mustang. Do you?

Make-A-Wish kid claims victory against NASCAR great Casey Mears in MINILAND 400

Earlier today, 10-year-old Layla Popoff of Orlando, Fla., zoomed to victory in the MINILAND 400 against veteran NASCAR driver Casey Mears, during a special event #BuiltForKids to celebrate the giant new Daytona International Speedway model at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort.

MINILAND 400

NASCAR driver Casey Mears, left, races 10-year-old Layla Popoff of Orlando, Fla., in the MINILAND 400.

Driving the No. 00 car in honor of the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola, which returns to the “World Center of Racing” on July 2, Layla was a tough competitor for Casey, who drove a kid-sized version of his No. 13 GEICO car for Germain Racing.

MINILAND 400After taking off from between LEGO® models of the Statue of Liberty and the U.S. Capitol in MINILAND USA, Layla and Casey quickly reached a top speed of nearly four miles per hour in the electric vehicles borrowed from our popular Driving School attraction.

MINILAND 400

Casey’s dreams of a MINILAND 400 victory came to abrupt end when he crashed into a wall of giant LEGO bricks near the finish line.

Neck-and-neck they zoomed past the New York City skyline, remaining close as they barreled down the Las Vegas Strip.  With the finish line in sight at the new Daytona display, Casey suddenly plowed into a pile of giant LEGO bricks near Kennedy Space Center while Layla raced ahead to claim victory.  Her prize? A giant LEGO trophy accepted with a triumphant smile. Take a look:

Layla was selected for the one-of-a-kind race with the assistance of Merlin’s Magic Wand, a global charity that has helped nearly 300,000 children and their families enjoy a magical day out at more than 100 attractions operated around the world by Merlin Entertainments, parent company of LEGOLAND. Earlier this year, Layla’s dream of a huge backyard playhouse was fulfilled by Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida.

MINILAND 400Afterward, the friendly competitors headed to the theme park’s new Imagination Zone.  Let me tell you, this place is what your LEGO dreams are made of.  It’s filled with hands-on LEGO building activities where kids can put their imaginations into overdrive.

Imagination Zone

After the MINILAND 400 race, Casey and Layla headed to the new Wheels Zone inside Imagination Zone, where they built and tested LEGO race cars.

Since Casey is a racing expert (even if he did get beat by a 10-year-old) he gave several young fans great tips for building creative LEGO vehicles to race down timed ramps in the new Wheels Zone. I wonder who had more fun, Casey or the kids?

MINILAND 400

Layla helped Casey and Chip Wile, president of Daytona International Speedway, place Minilander likenesses of the two men into the giant new LEGO model of the “World Center of Racing.”

2016.06.20_LEGOLANDFLORIDA_DIS_0064Casey’s fans can watch him in the Coke Zero 400 at the real Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, July 2. Good luck, Casey!
