Fridays are heating up in October

This month, we’re once again partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to host Firefighter Fridays at LEGOLAND Florida Resort.  On four consecutive Fridays starting Oct. 9, kids can meet and interact with their real-life heroes.  And we’re not talking about our Master Model Builders!

The fun kicks off Oct. 9 as we celebrate Fire Prevention Week with NFPA. This year’s theme is “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep,” which encourages everyone to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.

Highlights will include opportunities to learn about fire safety from local firefighters, a LEGO® City-themed brick build, a search-and-rescue photo op, a passport-stamp drawing for a LEGO prize pack and a high-spirited Rescue Academy competition in which three lucky families will be picked to compete against real firefighters. After all the excitement, first responders visiting the park can get a discount on cool treats from Firehouse Ice Cream by showing their identification.

Firefighter Fridays continue on Oct. 16, 23 and 30. On each date, families can learn fire safety tips, interact with local firefighters and enjoy giveaways.

The annual honor is bestowed on businesses by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, a government organization serving more than 50,000 Floridians with autism, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The 2015 Exceptional Employer honors were announced at City Hall in Tallahassee, Fla., the state’s capital, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Companies were selected for demonstrating “an outstanding commitment to hiring individuals with disabilities,” according to APD.

In September, we hosted two Central Florida Down syndrome organizations as part of Fun Festival, a Merlin's Magic Wand event that took place at Merlin sites around the world.

“We truly believe LEGOLAND Florida Resort is built for kids,” spokeswoman Brittany Williams said in accepting the award. “And we mean it. All kids. Kids of every ability. As a business that welcomes guests to Florida from all over the world, including many with disabilities, it’s vitally important that our employees — our Model Citizens, as we call them — reflect the diversity of our guests and our community.”

Through Merlin’s Magic Wand (MMW), the worldwide charitable organization established by LEGOLAND Florida Resort’s parent company, Merlin Entertainments, we strive to deliver magical experiences to seriously ill, disabled and disadvantaged children across the world. Locally, the resort supports MMW by collecting donations, hosting children’s visits, raising awareness and identifying children that would benefit from our support.

End your night with brick-tastic fireworks during Brick or Treat

Fireworks explode in the night sky above Lake Eloise during Brick or Treat.

Fireworks explode in the night sky above Lake Eloise during Brick or Treat. Wear the free viewing glasses and you’ll see a LEGO surprise in the sky!

For an awesome grand finale to your Brick or Treat Halloween adventure, look no further! This year we’ve debuted an all-new, brick-tacular fireworks show staged just beyond the sandy shores of Pirates’ Cove. It’s a perfect fit for our popular Halloween event since pirate lore is full of tales of skeletons, ghost ships and sea monsters.

To set the stage for the exclusive, swashbuckling spectacle, Pirates’ Cove is themed to all manner of rollicking pirate fun — a favorite Halloween theme of mine and kids everywhere.

During the day, a LEGO® shipwreck and skeletons await along with opportunities to meet Captain Brickbeard himself. At night, all guests receive free viewing glasses that provide a uniquely LEGO twist to the action exploding in the skies above Lake Eloise.

The picturesque beauty of Lake Eloise provides a breathtaking stage for the exclusive 3D fireworks show presented on each Brick or Treat date.

Celebrating fun and family

Awesome awaits at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort this weekend for an extraordinary organization in Polk County.  Merlin’s Magic Wand, the charitable arm of our parent company, Merlin Entertainments, will host the Down Syndrome Association of Polk County at LEGOLAND Florida Resort for its second annual Down Syndrome Awareness Day.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, 60 VIP guests of the Polk County organization will explore and enjoy LEGOLAND Florida Resort with their families, as part of Merlin’s Magic Wand Fun Festival, a charitable event taking place at Merlin sites around the world in September.

The first 2015 Fun Festival Event at LEGOLAND Florida Resort was held earlier this month, when 300 visitors from the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida were invited to be our guests of honor. Katie DeHart, program coordinator for the Central Florida organization, said that Merlin’s Challenge, the spinning train ride in the theme park’s LEGO® Kingdoms area, was a favorite of many children. The day’s fun was captured with a group photo in the heart of LEGOLAND Florida Resort, Miniland USA.

Merlin’s Magic Wand exists to put the magic back into the childhoods of seriously ill, disabled and disadvantaged children. The nonprofit organization works with more than 100 different Merlin Entertainments attractions worldwide and has helped over 217,000 children and their families enjoy magical days out.
