LEGOLAND® Florida Resort’s #BrickPony leaves tread marks from Connecticut to Florida

Quick: Name something that united Ford Mustang fans, LEGO® fans, football fans, Florida vacationers and bloggers over the past four weeks.

Give up? It’s #BrickPony, LEGOLAND® Florida Resort’s 1:1 replica of the so-called “1964½” Ford Mustang V8 coupe, which has been traveling from Connecticut to Indiana to Florida on the way to its permanent home at the theme park #BuiltForKids.brickpony_13

Sponsored by Southern Ford Dealers and created brick by brick by a team of Master Builders at LEGO Systems, Inc., in Enfield, Conn., the giant model was finished in late August and soon loaded into a colorfully decorated trailer for its debut in Indianapolis.

There, Mustang Club of America hosted its 40th anniversary event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sept. 1-4, where thousands of Mustang owners and enthusiasts from around the world celebrated their mutual love for the American classic. Original Mustang designer Gale Halderman and racing legend Richard Petty stopped by to marvel at the precise re-creation, and both added their autographs to the model.galehalderman_autograph_01richardpetty_autograph_01

Next, she headed back to Enfield to receive a special UV coating to protect her 194,900-LEGO brick body from Florida’s abundant sunshine. Then it was southbound to the Sunshine State.

Orlando, Fla., was stop No. 2 on the #BrickPony tour. On Sept. 22, this more-than-one-trick pony amused visitors at the popular I-Drive 360 entertainment complex with a few fun surprises built into its trunk. Come back to our blog soon to see what happened next!

Two days later, #BrickPony showed up in dozens of tweets and Instagram photos as bloggers snapped selfies during the fourth FLBlogCon at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Fla. The next day, Sept. 25, thousands of football fans arriving to see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face off against the Los Angeles Rams saw #BrickPony parked outside Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium.img_0122

What’s next? Come see her in her new home at LEGOLAND Florida Resort outside the Ford Driving School attraction starting Saturday, Oct. 1! We’ll have a full recap of the special “homecoming” ceremony here on the blog next week.

#BrickPony dazzles Ford Mustang fans in Indianapolis; here’s where to see it next

brickpony_13

#BrickPony was visited by Ford Mustang fans from around the world during its debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Last week at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, we unveiled #BrickPony to an enthusiastic audience of Ford Mustang owners and fans from around the world during the 40th anniversary celebration of Mustang Club of America. Made of 194,900 standard LEGO® and DUPLO® bricks, the life-size replica of the “1964½” V8 coupe was embraced by enthusiasts who have made the Mustang one of the most famous brands in automotive history.

A team of LEGO Master Builders spent 1,200 hours assembling #BrickPony out of 194,900 LEGO and DUPLO bricks.

Gale Halderman, center, who helped design the original Ford Mustang in the early 1960s, stopped to chat with members of the team from LEGO Systems, Inc. who designed and built #BrickPony.

galehalderman_autograph_01

Gale started with Ford in 1954, at age 21, and retired in 1994.

Among her many admirers were two legends — Gale Halderman, a member of the Ford team that designed the original Mustang more than 52 years ago, and racing’s “king,” Richard Petty, the most decorated driver in NASCAR history. Both marveled at the detail of the giant model, which took a team of LEGO Master Builders 1,200 hours to assemble at LEGO Systems, Inc., in Enfield, Conn.

What’s next for #BrickPony? If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of her rolling south in a custom-decorated trailer on the way to LEGOLAND® Florida Resort. But first, our friends at Southern Ford Dealers will show it off at two upcoming events they’re sponsoring:

Saturday, Sept. 24
FLBlogCon
Full Sail University
Winter Park, Fla.

Sunday, Sept. 25
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Los Angeles Rams
Raymond James Stadium
Tampa, Fla.

Finally, on Saturday, Oct. 1, we’ll unveil #BrickPony outside our Ford Driving School attraction during a private “homecoming” event for members of the Southern Ford Dealers family and our annual passholders. When the theme park opens later that morning, she’ll be on display for everyone to see and enjoy for years to come!

Meet the team bringing #BrickPony to life

Can you believe there are people who get paid to build things out of LEGO® bricks?

Believe it. LEGO Master Model Builders Pete, Dave, Colin, Greg, Nate, Sam and TJ are currently assembling the life-size replica of the “1964½” Ford Mustang at the U.S. headquarters of The LEGO Group in Enfield, Conn. Here’s an exclusive peek at the team inside the model shop:

#BrickPony

The team of veteran Master Model Builders creating #BrickPony have more than three decades of experience building dazzling models out of millions of LEGO bricks.

Led by Pete, a LEGO veteran, Team #BrickPony is making swift, brick-by-brick progress on the giant model, which is set to arrive at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort this fall, where it will go on permanent display outside the Ford Driving School attraction sponsored by Southern Ford Dealers. Altogether, the talented team has more than 30 years of building experience — that’s a lot of bricks!

#BrickPony

Designed by LEGO Master Model Builders using special software, the giant model is assembled from the bottom up in layers, just like an ordinary LEGO set. Large DUPLO® bricks are used for support in the model’s unseen interior.

According to Dale, the build’s senior project manager, while creating a LEGO car may not resemble the way they’re built in Detroit, the process is remarkably similar to assembling a typical LEGO set.

“We are building it like you would at home — one brick and one layer at a time, starting from the bottom,” he said.

#BrickPony

LEGO Master Model Builder Sam is part of the seven-person team building the life-size Ford Mustang brick by brick, layer by layer.

Check out Sam, shown here working on layer No. 63 out of the 165 layers it will take to create the Mustang. When complete, the finished model will measure more than 15 feet long, nearly 6 feet wide and more than 4 feet tall.

How many LEGO bricks will it take to build this American classic? We’re not saying — yet. Leave a reply with your best guess!

Less than three weeks remain before #BrickPony debuts at a special four-day event in Indianapolis. You can follow its travels here on our blog and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
