Power up! Tampa Electric celebrates completion of 1.8-megawatt solar canopy at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort

This morning, LEGOLAND® Florida Resort celebrated Tampa Electric’s completion of a solar canopy over portions of our parking lot that’s now producing electricity — and shade — for guests. It’s a project we first announced on Earth Day earlier this year.

6-year-old Carson from West Palm Beach, Fla., flipped a giant switch made of LEGO® bricks to officially “power up” the new solar array.

Multiple rows of solar panels can produce enough electricity to power more than 200 homes and enough shade for more than 600 cars. It’s Tampa Electric’s second large-scale photovoltaic (PV) array to be installed in the communities it serves, and its first large-scale array in Polk County.

Solar energy collected from the panels can power the entire LEGOLAND Hotel!

Tampa Electric owns the PV array, and the electricity it produces goes to the grid, benefiting the company’s 730,000 customers, including LEGOLAND Florida Resort. The panels can generate enough electricity from the sun to power the resort’s 152-room LEGOLAND Hotel!

The new solar canopy provides shade for more than 600 guest vehicles in the LEGOLAND parking lot.

The new system joins a smaller PV installation already in the theme park. In 2014, the company installed solar panels atop Imagination Zone, a large, indoor attraction filled with hands-on science and engineering-based activities for kids. So far, Tampa Electric has installed nine community-based solar PV arrays that offer the public an opportunity to see solar up close and to learn about the technology.

Fun facts

  • Rated at 1.8 megawatts
  • Consists of 5,225 345-watt solar panels supported by 211 steel columns
  • Canopy contains more than 500,000 pounds of steel
  • Covers more than 116,000 square feet

Make-A-Wish kid claims victory against NASCAR great Casey Mears in MINILAND 400

Earlier today, 10-year-old Layla Popoff of Orlando, Fla., zoomed to victory in the MINILAND 400 against veteran NASCAR driver Casey Mears, during a special event #BuiltForKids to celebrate the giant new Daytona International Speedway model at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort.

MINILAND 400

NASCAR driver Casey Mears, left, races 10-year-old Layla Popoff of Orlando, Fla., in the MINILAND 400.

Driving the No. 00 car in honor of the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola, which returns to the “World Center of Racing” on July 2, Layla was a tough competitor for Casey, who drove a kid-sized version of his No. 13 GEICO car for Germain Racing.

MINILAND 400After taking off from between LEGO® models of the Statue of Liberty and the U.S. Capitol in MINILAND USA, Layla and Casey quickly reached a top speed of nearly four miles per hour in the electric vehicles borrowed from our popular Driving School attraction.

MINILAND 400

Casey’s dreams of a MINILAND 400 victory came to abrupt end when he crashed into a wall of giant LEGO bricks near the finish line.

Neck-and-neck they zoomed past the New York City skyline, remaining close as they barreled down the Las Vegas Strip.  With the finish line in sight at the new Daytona display, Casey suddenly plowed into a pile of giant LEGO bricks near Kennedy Space Center while Layla raced ahead to claim victory.  Her prize? A giant LEGO trophy accepted with a triumphant smile. Take a look:

Layla was selected for the one-of-a-kind race with the assistance of Merlin’s Magic Wand, a global charity that has helped nearly 300,000 children and their families enjoy a magical day out at more than 100 attractions operated around the world by Merlin Entertainments, parent company of LEGOLAND. Earlier this year, Layla’s dream of a huge backyard playhouse was fulfilled by Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida.

MINILAND 400Afterward, the friendly competitors headed to the theme park’s new Imagination Zone.  Let me tell you, this place is what your LEGO dreams are made of.  It’s filled with hands-on LEGO building activities where kids can put their imaginations into overdrive.

Imagination Zone

After the MINILAND 400 race, Casey and Layla headed to the new Wheels Zone inside Imagination Zone, where they built and tested LEGO race cars.

Since Casey is a racing expert (even if he did get beat by a 10-year-old) he gave several young fans great tips for building creative LEGO vehicles to race down timed ramps in the new Wheels Zone. I wonder who had more fun, Casey or the kids?

MINILAND 400

Layla helped Casey and Chip Wile, president of Daytona International Speedway, place Minilander likenesses of the two men into the giant new LEGO model of the “World Center of Racing.”

2016.06.20_LEGOLANDFLORIDA_DIS_0064Casey’s fans can watch him in the Coke Zero 400 at the real Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, July 2. Good luck, Casey!

The 1/20-scale model of the “World Center of Racing” was updated following the DAYTONA Rising project — a $400 million frontstretch renovation that made DIS the first motorsports stadium in the world.

On Tuesday, June 7, Monday, June 20, we’ll celebrate to the sound of roaring engines and cheering fans during the “MINILAND 400,” a special, one-day-only race #BuiltForKids. Veteran NASCAR driver Casey Mears will visit LEGOLAND® Florida Resort to preview the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ return to DIS for the Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola on July 2.

MINILAND 400And you’re invited to witness history in the making!

Casey Mears is driver of the No. 13 GEICO ChevroletSS for Germain Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Picture this:  Mears will be snugly seated in a kid-size vehicle customized to match his No. 13 GEICO Germain Racing stock car, up against a 10-year-old girl representing Make-A-Wish® Central and Northern Florida in a race through MINILAND USA, home to dozens of LEGO landmarks from cities across the U.S.

LEGOLAND guests are welcome to witness the fun, which will start at around 11:30 a.m.

With a wave of the green flag, the drivers will take off from between the Statue of Liberty and U.S. Capitol, zoom past the New York City skyline and barrel down the Las Vegas Strip before reaching the finish line at the giant new Daytona International Speedway model.

Wheels Zone

Kids can build and test LEGO vehicles in the racing-themed Wheels Zone, part of the newly re-imagined Imagination Zone.

Afterward, Mears will greet fans in the newly re-imagined Imagination Zone.  Using his years of competitive driving expertise, he’ll help kids build and test creative LEGO vehicles before sending them zooming down timed ramps in the racing-themed Wheels Zone.

If you can’t join us in person, follow the fun with hashtag #MINILAND400 on our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels!

Fun facts

  • Designed by Merlin Magic Making, the new Daytona International Speedway display took a team of more than a dozen Master Model Builders to create out of 282,384 LEGO bricks.
  • The new stadium model stretches 31 feet and weighs more than 1,400 lbs.
  • The project required approximately 250 design hours and 2,100 build hours to complete.
  • Look for the word “Daytona” spelled out on fans’ shirts, a group of spectators holding letters that spell TURN LEFT and a contingent of misdirected soccer fans using their G-O-A-L signs to cheer on racers with G-O!
  • Sharp-eyed guests might also spot a cheeky nod to Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s recent heart-stopping moment when his steering wheel came off during a race.

Fans enjoy first look at LEGO® NEXO KNIGHTS™ 4D film and re-imagined Imagination Zone during exclusive sneak preview event

Last night, we invited several hundred LEGOLAND® Florida Resort fans to enjoy an evening of fun and surprises after the theme park closed, the first of what we hope are many exclusive events promoted here on our blog.

IMG_8872

An excited crowd waits for the sneak peek event to get started!

Those who signed up for the free, sneak preview event were the first to experience the all-new LEGO® NEXO KNIGHTS™ 4D film, which opened today, and the newly re-imagined Imagination Zone venue, which re-opens Friday, May 27, with lots of fun, hands-on LEGO building activities #BuiltForKids.

After entering the Wells Fargo® Fun Town Theater, everyone had a chance to show off their NEXO KNIGHTS knowledge during a casual game of “Know Your Knight,” and several lucky guests took home brand-new NEXO KNIGHTS building sets, each one cooler than the last.

theater

While one half of the group was busy creating at Imagination Zone, the other posed for a quick picture before the start of the 4D film.

Then the lights dimmed and it was showtime for “LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS: The Book of Creativity,” an immersive, 12½-minute 4D film that follows five young knights in their quest to defeat Jestro, the Book of Monsters and their army of Lava Monsters. During the action-packed adventure, wind and fog filled the air at key moments while occasional spritzes of water helped bring the action off the screen and into the seats, to the audience’s delight and surprise. Here’s a preview:

Across the park, creativity ran wild as kids explored the whimsical Imagination Zone building, which has been totally transformed with colorful new furnishings and floor-to-ceiling graphics. Highlights include Creation Zone, Water Zone, Wheels Zone, Building Zone and Flight Zone, with each area offering endless possibilities for kids to dream it, build it, race it, fly it, swim it and more!

Kids tested their engineering skills at Building Zone.

Both previews were a big hit with guests.

“My son and I had a BLAST!!!!” one remarked through the blog. “The movie was, according to my 6-year-old, ‘The rockin-est, awesomest NEXO KNIGHTS ever!’ You guys are AWESOME!!!”

Another had this to say: “The event tonight was great! The 4D movie was awesome and Imagination Zone is better than I ever could have asked. Worth the wait.”

Joining us for the evening as our guests of honor were students from Oasis Christian Academy in Winter Haven, Fla., an incredible group of kids from the Step Up For Students program.  Supported in part by LEGOLAND Florida Resort and other businesses throughout the state, the nonprofit organization helps manage the income-based Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, which provides parents tuition assistance for private schools or transportation resources for out-of-district public schools. We’re delighted to support its efforts to provide the best learning environment for children.

“The Step Up For Students Scholarship Program is helping to positively shape the future of our state’s children, but we couldn’t do this important work without donors like LEGOLAND Florida Resort,” said Doug Tuthill, the organization’s president. “We are grateful for their support and for the impact that LEGOLAND is making in our community.”

Oasis Christian Academy students were the night’s special guests.

Earlier today, “LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS: The Book of Creativity” officially opened to park guests, making its worldwide premiere here in Florida. A young brick fan by the name of Romeo was dubbed an honorary knight and given special knightly authority to lead a moment of celebration.  With sword and shield in hand, he helped cut a ceremonial ribbon and welcomed guests to enjoy the brand-new film.
