Taste the possibilities at Firehouse Ice Cream

Since signed into law by presidential proclamation in 1984, Americans have celebrated National Ice Cream Month every July and National Ice Cream Day on the third Sunday in July. (That’s July 17 this year.)

This year, why not celebrate with a scoop, cup, cone or sundae at one of the many locations serving ice cream at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort?

The awesome new Firehouse Ice Cream in LEGO City has a terrific menu of delicious choices, including eight flavors of Breyers ice cream, 15 different toppings and four sauces, plus two signature sundaes. Yum!

2015.06.26_LEGOLANDFLORIDA_HEATLAKE_0152The ultimate indulgence, the Rescue Squad Sundae, is made with a choice of a chocolate chip cookie or brownie, four scoops of ice cream, two sauces, two toppings, whipped cream and served in a souvenir bowl.

That got us thinking — how many different ways are there to create that sundae? To figure out the total number of possibilities, we turned to our resident math whiz and number cruncher, Ken. Here’s the answer:RescueSquadSundaeInfographicB

Through the eyes of a 3-year-old: A visit to Firehouse Ice Cream

Firehouse Ice Cream is an all-new dining location in LEGO® City.

Firehouse Ice Cream is an all-new dining location in LEGO® City.

The coolest new place to grab a sweet treat can be found in LEGO® City.  Step inside the all-new Firehouse Ice Cream, where the crew serves up hand-dipped ice cream, floats, sundaes, specialty coffees and plenty of cool drinks.

To find out the best approach for a first-time visitor, we went in search of an ice cream expert.  Meet Allie Guest, a 3-year-old brick fan who just happened to be our very special guest recently.  All it took was the promise of some extra sprinkles and Allie showed us how to pick like a pro.

Allie Guest, 3, checks out the flavors at Firehouse Ice Cream.

Allie enjoys her First Responder sundae.

She began by peeking into the cooler to check out the options. First, Allie was drawn to the bright green mint chocolate chip.  After a taste test, she decided it was good but that chocolate really hit the spot instead.

When it was time for toppings, Allie’s response was simple and direct. “I’ll take all of them,” she said.  (There are 15, actually.)

Mom helpfully translated for the Model Citizen taking Allie’s order and explained, “That means sprinkles and M&M’s.”  Allie’s order was expertly assembled in a bowl with a cone on top.  We call it the First Responder.

Between bites, Allie explained that a “roller coaster smile” like the one she gave on Project X is different than one you show while eating ice cream, but she gave us a sweet grin to signal a successful order.

LEGOLAND Hotel chef cooks up creativity with local students

Three Lake Region High School students from Eagle Lake, Fla., are teaming up with three LEGOLAND® Florida Resort chefs this week to prepare an appetizer, entrée and dessert that will compete in a fundraiser for Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay, Polk District.

On Friday, Oct. 16, their creative cuisine will be featured at the 15th annual Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival in Lakeland, Fla., during the first Culinary Cook-Off, a competition between local chefs that JA plans to make an annual event.

The nonprofit organization relies on volunteers to share their personal experiences and bring classroom curriculum to life. James Boheim, executive chef at LEGOLAND Hotel, recently was named a JA board member and says he looks forward to sharing his knowledge with students.

“At LEGOLAND Florida Resort, we’ve created a world where imagination and creativity thrive,” he said.   “Opportunities like this help us to bring those values into the community where we live.”

The Culinary Cook-Off will take place Oct. 16 from 6-9 p.m. at the historic Magnolia Building in downtown Lakeland. Advance tickets are $30 each and include tastings of all three competition categories (appetizer, entrée and dessert), plus two drink vouchers.
