Earlier today, 10-year-old Layla Popoff of Orlando, Fla., zoomed to victory in the MINILAND 400 against veteran NASCAR driver Casey Mears, during a special event #BuiltForKids to celebrate the giant new Daytona International Speedway model at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort.
Driving the No. 00 car in honor of the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola, which returns to the “World Center of Racing” on July 2, Layla was a tough competitor for Casey, who drove a kid-sized version of his No. 13 GEICO car for Germain Racing.
After taking off from between LEGO® models of the Statue of Liberty and the U.S. Capitol in MINILAND USA, Layla and Casey quickly reached a top speed of nearly four miles per hour in the electric vehicles borrowed from our popular Driving School attraction.
Neck-and-neck they zoomed past the New York City skyline, remaining close as they barreled down the Las Vegas Strip. With the finish line in sight at the new Daytona display, Casey suddenly plowed into a pile of giant LEGO bricks near Kennedy Space Center while Layla raced ahead to claim victory. Her prize? A giant LEGO trophy accepted with a triumphant smile. Take a look:
Layla was selected for the one-of-a-kind race with the assistance of Merlin’s Magic Wand, a global charity that has helped nearly 300,000 children and their families enjoy a magical day out at more than 100 attractions operated around the world by Merlin Entertainments, parent company of LEGOLAND. Earlier this year, Layla’s dream of a huge backyard playhouse was fulfilled by Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida.
Afterward, the friendly competitors headed to the theme park’s new Imagination Zone. Let me tell you, this place is what your LEGO dreams are made of. It’s filled with hands-on LEGO building activities where kids can put their imaginations into overdrive.
Since Casey is a racing expert (even if he did get beat by a 10-year-old) he gave several young fans great tips for building creative LEGO vehicles to race down timed ramps in the new Wheels Zone. I wonder who had more fun, Casey or the kids?
Late last week, LEGOLAND® California Resort welcomed celebrities and VIP guests to its own gala premiere of “The LEGO® Movie™ 4D A New Adventure.” Stars including John Michael Higgins, Ali Landry, Emmy Perry and pro skateboarder Andy MacDonald strolled the red carpet before entering the LEGO Show Place Theater to celebrate the return of Emmet, Wyldstyle, MetalBeard, Benny and Unikitty.
Joining the festivities was actor, writer and comedian Patton Oswalt, who voices the scheming Risky Business, a new character created exclusively for the new attraction.
When asked how it felt to join a “family” of well-known characters from “The LEGO Movie,” he responded, “It’s beyond flattering. It’s a clever, creative way of looking at, of all things, LEGO, and I was touched to be a part of it.”
Since Risky Business is a character that fans of “The LEGO Movie” haven’t seen before, he said he approached the acting challenge of hiding Risky’s true intentions “with the wiles of a LEGO coyote.”
Here are video highlights from last week’s star-studded world premiere of “The LEGO® Movie™ 4D A New Adventure,” including comments from…
- Singer-songwriter Megan Lee, star of Nickelodeon’s “Make It Pop”
- Madisyn Shipman, star of Nickelodeon’s “Game Shakers”
- Isabela Moner, star of Nickelodeon’s “100 Things to Do Before High School”
- Joey Bragg, star of Disney Channel’s “Liv and Maddie”
Other special guests on hand for the new attraction’s Hollywood-style debut were actress Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, star of ABC TV’s “Modern Family,” Jack Griffo, star of Nickelodeon’s “The Thundermans,” Jace Norman, star of Nickelodeon’s “Henry Danger,” plus social media sensations The Eh Bee Family and Family Fun Pack.
During a Hollywood-style ceremony filled with glitz, glamour and kid-friendly fun, LEGOLAND® Florida Resort celebrated the world premiere of its new attraction, “The LEGO® Movie™ 4D A New Adventure,” on Jan. 28 at the theme park built for kids.
The appropriately kid-centric festivities kicked off with stars and hundreds of fans strolling down an “interactive,” special effects-filled red carpet before entering the Wells Fargo Fun Town Theater to celebrate the return of Emmet, Wyldstyle, MetalBeard, Benny and Unikitty.
Celebrity guests included 8-year-old actress Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, star of ABC TV’s “Modern Family,” Joey Bragg, star of Disney Channel’s “Liv and Maddie,” Jack Griffo, star of Nickelodeon’s “The Thundermans,” singer-songwriter Megan Lee, star of Nickelodeon’s “Make It Pop,” Isabela Moner, star of Nickelodeon’s “100 Things to Do Before High School,” Jace Norman, star of Nickelodeon’s “Henry Danger,” Madisyn Shipman, star of Nickelodeon’s “Game Shakers,” and social media sensations The Eh Bee Family and Family Fun Pack.
Now open to guests, the 12 ½-minute attraction combines 3D computer animation, “4D” effects such as wind, water and fog, and the same sly humor that made the movie a worldwide blockbuster.
Now that the attraction is officially open, even more fun is on the horizon!
Every Saturday and Sunday in February, “The LEGO® Movie™ 4D” Weekends invite fans to celebrate the new adventure of Emmet and his Master Builder friends during an all-new event held exclusively at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort.
All activities are included with park admission and will include several LEGO model builds, a passport adventure to meet the attraction’s stars, prizes for select guests dressed as characters from “The LEGO Movie” and “The LEGO Movie 4D A New Adventure,” and an amazing fireworks spectacular to end the evening.
