LEGOLAND® Florida Resort welcomes back ‘Blue Elephant’ award winner

Nearly 25 years ago, Michael Dominik was an 11-year-old boy living in Germany when his life was changed by an elephant. A blue elephant.

Blue Elephant Award

Michael Dominik was one of a handful of children who received the coveted “blue elephant” LEGO award in the 1990s.

After entering a LEGO® building competition, Michael was delighted to learn he’d won a prestigious award that made him an “honorary citizen” of LEGOLAND®, a reference to what was then the only LEGOLAND park in the world, Denmark’s LEGOLAND Billund.

In addition to a regal certificate proclaiming his membership in SOCIUS HONORARIUS LEGOLANDIAE, Michael received a stylish medallion on a multicolored ribbon — a blue elephant made out of LEGO bricks.

Although the rare “blue elephant” honor has mostly been forgotten a quarter-century later, Michael always remembered one of its promised perks — lifetime free admission to LEGOLAND.

Michael Dominik

Michael recently visited LEGOLAND Florida Resort with his prestigious blue elephant medallion.

On a recent visit to LEGOLAND Florida Resort, Michael was warmly welcomed back to the site he’d visited years ago with his grandparents when it was Cypress Gardens, one of Florida’s oldest tourist attractions.

He said he was delighted to see the ways the site has changed now that it’s part of the global LEGOLAND family, and that he appreciated the efforts made to continue the water ski shows and preserve the 81-year-old botanical gardens that made the site famous.

Our green initiatives are making other businesses green with envy!

Keep Polk County BeautifulLEGOLAND® Florida Resort recently took top honors for its 2016 environmental efforts among businesses, nonprofits, municipalities and communities in Florida’s Polk County.

The prestigious Environmental Champion Award from Keep Polk County Beautiful is an annual honor that salutes the business that best exemplifies efforts in areas such as litter prevention, beautification, recycling and pollution prevention. LEGOLAND Florida Resort was recognized for:

  • Proactive recycling efforts, including the introduction of 10 brand-new recycling streams in 2016, bringing the site total to 20.
  • Increasing the resort’s landfill diversion efforts by 15 percent.
  • Identifying ways to proactively conserve energy, which has delivered energy savings equivalent to the annual electricity use of 21 homes.
  • Partnering with local utility Tampa Electric to install a 1.8-megawatt canopy of solar energy panels in the resort’s parking lot.
  • Installing a charging station for electric and hybrid vehicles at LEGOLAND Hotel.

Solar energy collected from the 1.8-megawatt parking lot canopy can power as many as 200 homes — or the entire LEGOLAND Hotel!

According to Miguel Velez, waste and environmental supervisor, the resort’s environmental sustainability efforts represent a team effort to find more and better ways to continue being a force for good.

We’re built for kids… and kindness!

This week we had the opportunity to pay it forward to two AWESOME kids that inspired all of us at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort. As soon as we heard about Jeffrey Holz, a second grader with a big heart, we knew we had to get involved.

Jeffrey had been saving up to buy a LEGO® set for a whole year, but once he found out that a senior at his school, Richard Gallop, was fighting a battle with cancer, he donated all his savings to help with Richard’s medical expenses.

Our parent company, Merlin Entertainments, operates according to a set of values we call the Merlin Way. One of the most important values is WE CARE. We care by giving back to our communities, taking care of the environment and being a good neighbor.

We put our heads together to plan an awesome surprise to honor Jeffrey and his kindness, complete with the LEGO set he’d been saving for and a trip to LEGOLAND Florida Resort. Before we knew it, several people jumped in to give back, including one of our awesome partners, Coca-Cola! Even Benny came along to help us!

Richard’s drive and determination to push through his battle with cancer inspired us as well. We made a few phone calls and with the help of some kind people, we were able to surprise Richard too, making it the ultimate brick-tastic day! Richard was awarded an acceptance letter and a scholarship to his dream school, Southeastern University, passes to the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, courtesy of Coca-Cola, and a stay at Gaylord Palms Resort to enjoy some much needed fun and relaxation with his amazing mom, who continues to stay positive during this difficult time.

We hope it was a day that both Jeffrey and Richard won’t forget. At LEGOLAND Florida Resort, kids take the lead and Jeffrey did just that! He taught us all that a little kindness can change everything!

We can’t wait to have Jeffrey and his family out to LEGOLAND Florida Resort to enjoy a day of FUN on us!!

LEGOLAND® Florida Resort’s environmental efforts made awesome impacts in 2016!

Just last year, LEGOLAND® Florida Resort introduced brand-new recycling initiatives that made a huge difference in the amount of material we recycle and the energy we save. With the help of our very own Waste & Environmental team and Model Citizens, the resort was able to recycle more than 1 million pounds of material through our day-to-day operations!

Here’s some of the stuff we recycled in 2016:

  • 215,000 pounds of cardboard
  • 55,000 pounds of paper (that’s 468 trees!)
  • 39,000 pounds of steel
  • 25,000 pounds of plastic
  • 4,000 pounds of aluminum
  • 11,000 pounds of car tires
  • 16,000 pounds of LEGO® bricks (including bricks recycled from our Merlin Magic Making facility in nearby Lake Wales, Fla.) — that’s enough bricks to build at least 16 copies of our #BrickPony model, the life-size replica of the original Ford Mustang on display outside Ford Driving School!
  • 2,000 pounds of soft LEGO bricks that can be found floating in our Build-a-Raft River in LEGOLAND Water Park

Fun fact: In 2016, LEGOLAND Florida Resort saved enough energy by recycling cardboard, plastic, steel and aluminum to power the theme park’s Heartlake City area for two years!

Another fun fact: We’ve saved a huge amount of energy. In fact, we saved enough energy to power 21 homes for a whole year!

And our energy saving efforts don’t stop there — 2017 is already off to a great start with a new energy-saving initiative that’s going to “light up” the theme park in a whole new way!

Stay tuned to learn more!
