New Daytona International Speedway stadium races toward Miniland

This week, Florida’s Daytona® International Speedway unveiled a dramatic new look for the world’s first motorsports stadium, one that takes the race experience to a whole new level for fans. The $400 million project took two years to complete and has resulted in a complete re-imagination of an American icon.

While guests marvel at the sleek, new stadium during this year’s Speedweeks, here at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort we’re speeding toward our own brick-tastic replica for Miniland. As we continue to upgrade the heart of LEGOLAND, our Master Model Builder team is redesigning the ginormous model from the ground up. Once the digital design is complete, the team will begin construction on one of the largest models in Miniland.

Here’s a peek of what you’ll see when the new Daytona International Speedway model is revealed later this spring:

Everything was, well, awesome!

Sage Stuchell

LEGO fan Sage Stuchell, 10, was one of three Grand Prize winners of last fall’s #BrickOrTreatContest.

One of the many VIPs who joined us for the recent red carpet, world premiere of “The LEGO® Movie 4D A New Adventure” was 10-year-old Sage Stuchell of Petoskey, Mich., making his very first visit to a LEGOLAND® theme park. Sage was one of three lucky Grand Prize winners of the #BrickOrTreatContest we sponsored with HLN’s “Morning Express with Robin Meade” cable news show last fall.

During a whirlwind visit to LEGOLAND Florida Resort, Sage and his family — dad Stephen, mom Emily and 7-year-old sister Sienna — enjoyed the theme park, a private session with our Master Model Builders, accommodations in our brand-new LEGOLAND Hotel and an invitation to be our special guests for the world premiere of the new attraction.

The Stuchell Family

Sage and his family: dad Stephen, mom Emily and 7-year-old sister Sienna.

The Stuchell Family

Sage and his family attended the world premiere of “The LEGO Movie 4D A New Adventure” alongside several kid celebrities and social media stars.

How was it? Here’s what Sage had to say after returning home:

I liked LEGOLAND® very, very much.

I could tell the first night we stepped out of the car at the hotel it was the best hotel I’ve ever been to. There was a huge LEGO® clock and a dragon all made out of LEGO. Behind the front desk was a whole wall full of minifigures and a big pit of LEGO to build in the middle of the lobby.

Sage Stuchell

Sage and his sister enjoy the “LEGO loot” from the treasure chest in their LEGOLAND Hotel room.

Then we went into the elevator. What? A disco party! We got one of Brickbeard’s pirate rooms and I thought the LEGO builds on the walls were very cool. There was a LEGO lizard, spider, cannonball, parrot, mouse and pirate artifacts. We decoded a lock and opened a treasure chest full of LEGO loot.

When I saw the LEGOLAND theme park I thought it was the most amazing place I’ve ever seen!  All the rides were awesome! My favorites were The Dragon and Coastersaurus, because they are very high and I like to be up high. There is even an Island in the Sky.

I thought Miniland was going to be smaller but it was huge! So much to see. The Star Wars battle of Geonosis was super realistic. The Darth Vader, Darth Maul and R2-D2 were life-size and very accurately built. I was very impressed!

Sage Stuchell

Nickelodeon star Isabela Moner, center, poses with Sage and his sister.

We watched Brickbeard’s water ski show and ate Granny’s Apple Fries in the Florida sunshine. My sister loved Heartlake City and Mia’s Riding Adventure. We even got our LEGO driver’s license.

The “LEGO Movie™ 4D” premiere was my FAVORITE! There were so many awesome treats like cookies and cupcakes! I saw many of the Nickelodeon and Disney stars I see on TV every day. It made me feel very special to be part of the red carpet event.

During the movie, I loved the all “4D” effects, especially when the lemonade stand squirted us! It felt like I could touch everything, and LEGO were right in my face. I loved meeting all the LEGO characters, even Lord Risky.

I couldn’t believe all the bricks in the LEGO Master Model Builders’ workshop. It was cool to see where and how Master Model Builders work. All the hard work the designers do makes it fun to put together these amazing LEGO sets.

The LEGO© replica of the Orlando I-Drive 360 attractions is the newest model in Miniland U.S.A.

At the center of this awesome model is a 9-foot-tall LEGO© replica of The Orlando Eye, surrounded by Madame Tussauds Orlando and SEA LIFE Aquarium Orlando. All three are part of the ever-growing portfolio of attractions created by Merlin Entertainments, parent company of LEGOLAND Florida Resort.

The display is part of a remodel taking place throughout the entire Florida section of Miniland U.S.A., which recently included making improvements to all the underwater models and pools of water.

The new model was designed and assembled by our Master Model Builders here at the resort. It spans more than 10 feet wide, contains over 60,000 LEGO bricks and took more than 160 hours to build. And like the actual observation wheel, ours spins too!

Inside the mind of Risky Business

Patton Oswalt

Actor, writer and comedian Patton Oswalt voices Risky Business, brother of movie villain President Business.

Late last week, LEGOLAND® California Resort welcomed celebrities and VIP guests to its own gala premiere of “The LEGO® Movie™ 4D A New Adventure.” Stars including John Michael Higgins, Ali Landry, Emmy Perry and pro skateboarder Andy MacDonald strolled the red carpet before entering the LEGO Show Place Theater to celebrate the return of Emmet, Wyldstyle, MetalBeard, Benny and Unikitty.

Joining the festivities was actor, writer and comedian Patton Oswalt, who voices the scheming Risky Business, a new character created exclusively for the new attraction.

When asked how it felt to join a “family” of well-known characters from “The LEGO Movie,” he responded, “It’s beyond flattering. It’s a clever, creative way of looking at, of all things, LEGO, and I was touched to be a part of it.”

Since Risky Business is a character that fans of “The LEGO Movie” haven’t seen before, he said he approached the acting challenge of hiding Risky’s true intentions “with the wiles of a LEGO coyote.”
